Nikon LS-40 / LS-50 / LS-5000 Scanners on Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista 64-bit!

Nikon apparently missed the 64-bit computing world, in particular their excellent USB slide scanners (LS-40, LS-50 and LS-5000 ED) are totally unsupported under Windows 8.x 64-bit, Windows 7 64-bit, and 64-bit Windows Vista. Fortunately, thanks to Microsoft, all recent editions of Windows, including 64-bit ones, contains a generic USB scanner driver. All it takes is a little persuasion to make it recognize Nikon USB slide scanners and, from there, Nikon own software - namely the 32-bit Nikon Scan 4.03 - will happily talk to your beloved piece of gear... Interested? Read on...

First thing first, you need a small file named NikonUsbScanners64.zip, which contains information that will lead Windows to recognize your device as a scanner. Get it there and save it to some place on your hard disk, for example in your Documents folder (the actual location is unimportant, just make sure to know where you put it as you'll need to refer to that location later). Unzip the file: you should end up with a readme.txt file, NikonUsbScanners64.cat and NikonUsbScanners64.inf - note that there is no .sys and nothing executable, and that the relevant files are digitally signed.

Next, download the last version of Nikon Scan (4.03 at the time of this writing) from the Nikon website, then proceed as follow:

Plug the scanner in a free USB port, turn it on and let Windows try, and fail, to find a driver for it, then...

1) Open the Device Manager (the quickest way is to click the Start button on Windows' taskbar, type Device Manager in the search box, the start menu should soon display the needed entry, click to open). Windows 8.x users can simply type Device Manager on the start screen, then look under Settings.
2) In the Device Manager window, locate the LS-5000 ED scanner (or LS-40 / LS-50) under Other Devices, then right-click the scanner's name and click Update Driver Software...
3) Click Browse my computer for driver software.
4) Type the name of the folder where you have unzipped the driver files (or use the Browse... button to navigate to that folder) and click the Next button.
5) Click Install on the Windows Security prompt, then click Close after Windows finished installing the driver.

Finally, install Nikon Scan 4.03 normally, but be sure to uncheck both drivers (LS-4000 / 8000 / 9000 and LS-40 / 50 / 5000) on the Select Drivers page.

That's it. The 32-bit Nikon Scan 4 should work fine on Windows 8.1, 8 and 7 64-bit (and Vista) and your scanner should be found and recognized. You can now delete the zip, readme, cat and inf files, they are not needed anymore.

EDIT: Aug 24, 2013 - The driver information file is now signed with Axel's VeriSign Class 3 digital certificate, which should remove the warning that was displayed on Windows 8.x

Brought to you by the makers of FastPictureViewer Professional, a fast 64-bit image viewer designed for photographers, and the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack, a 64-bit image codec collection extending Windows 7, Vista and XP SP3 with raw format support for 460+ digital camera models, Photoshop PSD, and a number of other image file formats such as TGA, SGI, DDS, Open EXR, HDR and more.

I know this is late to the party, but thank you for this. Works great on my Win7 Ultimate, and I imagine it will work on my W10 Pro box as well. Since my house is bilingual, any chance you have a work around for getting this scanner to work on a Mac running El Capitan?

Thanks very much, worked on Windows 10 Pro after I set Compatibility mode to Windows Vista.

Right-Click the desktop shortcut > Properties > Compatibility [> Change settings for all users] > Select "Run this program in Compatibility mode for:" > Windows Vista

Hello all,

I am a Vuescan user for a flatbed scanner and had recently the opportunity to use a Nikon 5000ED. I was using Vuescan but at some point give Nikonscan a try and find it a better option to master contrast and density. I have run Nikon scan 4.03 (installation without the embedded drivers)with a driver installed by Vuescan and it was working fine. At some point during the scan of a slide with Nikonscan, my PC reboot and now it doesn't want to work properly anymore (it cannot connect to the scanner). I have reinstalled Nikonscan, tried to update the driver with the driver attached hereabove(Windows told me it was uptodate and Windows was anyway recognizing the Nikon scanner) but nothing works. Maybe someone has some good idea to recover the use of Nikonscan. All the best. Eric

Way after your post, but we're still out here, looking for solutions that Nikon didn't bother to do.
Your post (with links to the needed software) was wonderful! I can't thank you enough, been using an old Windows XP machine for years. Put it on my Windows 7 SP1 64-bit and works perfectly!

Excellent solution to a problem I've had for some time, "solved" till I came across this article by installing on my Windows 7 machine a virtual machine running XP. Clunky. But this is just perfect. Nikon should place a link to this article on their website.

Does your driver work with the 9000 ED as well? Has anyone checked that?

Hello Axel Rietschin, this solution worked PERFECTLY on Windows 10 Pro (Which I just installed on a 2014 MacBook Pro Retina Using Bootcamp to load the Windows 10!)

Thank you so much, Andy.

Thanks for this fix Alex. Unfortunately after the Anniversary update of Windows 10 I do not seem to be able to use the scanner or update the driver again.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this but if so and have found a fix please post here

I have failed to get 4.0.3 to install on Win10 Pro 64-bit Anniversary edition - it throws all manner of errors and will not install.

Just reverted to 4.0.2 on XP Pro 32-bit in mild desperation - and now that is failing too, it complains about the driver (Nikon 4.0.0).
Anyone know why?

Unknown said...

Just for information - I finally got it all working, both 4.0.2 on XP and 4.0.3 on the latest Windows 10.
Persistence and simply trying several times - eventually it just worked!
I can't claim to have done anything different or worked out why it was throwing so many errors originally - but success will do!

This is fantastic work. I was on the verge of getting rid of my old LS 40 scanner which had been sleeping useless for 13 years and, thanks to Axel's driver which I found by chance, it now works on Windows 10! Please, please, continue to update it. Patrice from France

Thanks I've been using this method for, hm, a decade now? Through four OS and all of their builds, jeesh. The Nikon CoolSCan V ED is still a nice piece of hardware and Axel's kept it relevant and operating.

Dear Axel,
In 2007 you saved my Nikon scanner for the first time when I was passing from Windows XP to . Windows 7. Today, I’ve passed to Windows 10 and once again, your method worked flawlessly. I now have a sixteen year old film scanner that is working as new under a program I master completely since years. Many thanks. By writing this little page, you have done more for Earth sustainability than other so called “green knights” by crossing the ocean!

First post of 2020, and very glad to say I've just got this working on W10 Pro. Many. many thanks for this very, very useful download.

Just tried on Windows 10 Home and it appeared to go through OK until finished.
However almost immediately the installation was completed, it resulted in a blue screen and "K Mode Exception Not Handled". This blue screen could only be resolved by reverting to a restore point immediately before the new drivers were loaded. :-(

Thank you ! It makes my 5000ED work again~

Thank you *so much* for leaving this post, and your blog, online after all of these years! The first methods I saw for hooking my Coolscan V to my Windows 7 Pro x64 machine were really complicated. I'm glad I kept searching because yours worked perfectly... I was scanning in just a few minutes.

Thanks again.

Axel !
You are the Man!!! Thank you for leaving this blog post up for almost 14 years! I'm using Nikon Scan on Win 11 for all of the functionality it facilitates from a Coolscan V ED. I've had a number of Coolscans, but I but never got the Nikon Scan software to work until now.
This is awesome, and you are awesome!
From grandma and grandpa on down to the grandkids, Thank you!
