Nikon LS-40 / LS-50 / LS-5000 Scanners on Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista 64-bit!

Nikon apparently missed the 64-bit computing world, in particular their excellent USB slide scanners (LS-40, LS-50 and LS-5000 ED) are totally unsupported under Windows 8.x 64-bit, Windows 7 64-bit, and 64-bit Windows Vista. Fortunately, thanks to Microsoft, all recent editions of Windows, including 64-bit ones, contains a generic USB scanner driver. All it takes is a little persuasion to make it recognize Nikon USB slide scanners and, from there, Nikon own software - namely the 32-bit Nikon Scan 4.03 - will happily talk to your beloved piece of gear... Interested? Read on...

First thing first, you need a small file named NikonUsbScanners64.zip, which contains information that will lead Windows to recognize your device as a scanner. Get it there and save it to some place on your hard disk, for example in your Documents folder (the actual location is unimportant, just make sure to know where you put it as you'll need to refer to that location later). Unzip the file: you should end up with a readme.txt file, NikonUsbScanners64.cat and NikonUsbScanners64.inf - note that there is no .sys and nothing executable, and that the relevant files are digitally signed.

Next, download the last version of Nikon Scan (4.03 at the time of this writing) from the Nikon website, then proceed as follow:

Plug the scanner in a free USB port, turn it on and let Windows try, and fail, to find a driver for it, then...

1) Open the Device Manager (the quickest way is to click the Start button on Windows' taskbar, type Device Manager in the search box, the start menu should soon display the needed entry, click to open). Windows 8.x users can simply type Device Manager on the start screen, then look under Settings.
2) In the Device Manager window, locate the LS-5000 ED scanner (or LS-40 / LS-50) under Other Devices, then right-click the scanner's name and click Update Driver Software...
3) Click Browse my computer for driver software.
4) Type the name of the folder where you have unzipped the driver files (or use the Browse... button to navigate to that folder) and click the Next button.
5) Click Install on the Windows Security prompt, then click Close after Windows finished installing the driver.

Finally, install Nikon Scan 4.03 normally, but be sure to uncheck both drivers (LS-4000 / 8000 / 9000 and LS-40 / 50 / 5000) on the Select Drivers page.

That's it. The 32-bit Nikon Scan 4 should work fine on Windows 8.1, 8 and 7 64-bit (and Vista) and your scanner should be found and recognized. You can now delete the zip, readme, cat and inf files, they are not needed anymore.

EDIT: Aug 24, 2013 - The driver information file is now signed with Axel's VeriSign Class 3 digital certificate, which should remove the warning that was displayed on Windows 8.x

Brought to you by the makers of FastPictureViewer Professional, a fast 64-bit image viewer designed for photographers, and the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack, a 64-bit image codec collection extending Windows 7, Vista and XP SP3 with raw format support for 460+ digital camera models, Photoshop PSD, and a number of other image file formats such as TGA, SGI, DDS, Open EXR, HDR and more.

Thanks a lot Axel! Nikon is testing since September - what a shame! Of course there is Silverfast, but why pay for another software, especially when I prefer to use the NEF-format and do the colour and tone correction in the raw-converter or even later. Very helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to make it so clear how to make this work.

Often folks online give solutions that assume you know some of the more obscure things they're telling you to do, rather then taking you through each step like you did.

Your instructions left nothing out and I got my 5000 running without a glitch in 5 minutes on my Windows 7 64bit laptop, much obliged.

As someone said above, how hard would it be for Nikon to post such a fix on their website? That company has a lot to learn from Canon, which is much better at taking care of its customers.

Thanks again, if people follow the sequence exactly, (i.e. don't install the program until the OS has identified and incorporated the inf files) it'll go without a hitch.

Thank you so much Axel!
At the end of 2009 I bought a new PC configuration to be able to work a bit faster with my Nikon Coolscan V. I was very disappointed after discovering the scanner couldn't work with Windows 7. Nikon NL would automatically keep me updated as soon there was news about to share. After almost a year I still didn't receive any message and I myself discovered Nikon would not provide us with any software update at all. You can imagine how hapy I am today.
Your described solution is simple to understand and also to install.
You did a great job; WELL DONE!!

Many thanks! I've been waiting patiently for Nikon to update the driver for Windows 7 64-bit to work with my Nikon Coolscan V ED. I was disappaointed to find they were not planning an update, since the Coolscan was quite pricey. Your solution works great and your directions were accurate and easy to understand. Invaluable!!

Quick, easy fix that works. Thanks very much.

However, my LS 5000 running Nikonscan Vista is slower than XP version, (both in compatability mode,) and both get progressively slower by about 5 seconds per scan.
(Win 7-64, i7 860, 6GB ram, nothing evident in Task Manager/Resource Monitor.)
Any suggestions please?

Just got a new computer last week and was mightily pissed that Nikon left us hanging. And then have the audacity to suggest that we buy and learn a third party piece of software after spending a small fortune on the hardware to begin with. I guess it never occurred to them that people who own film scanners also buy other high end photo equipment. (Dumb SOBs!)

I can't thank you enough for this fix. Very clear instructions and dead simple to install. I was about to turn my LS-40 into a very expensive doorstop. Now I'm back to scanning with it.

Unknown said...

As everyone else has said, it worked great for setting up my Nikon slide scanner. Unfortunately it has blocked my Epson flatbed scanner from working any longer, even after uninstalling and reinstalling it. And when I tried uninstalling the Nikon scanner (which is only an occasional use scanner for me), it just gives an error message that "Nikon 4.0.3 doesn't run on this operating system" and won't let me uninstall it (so that I can reinstall my everyday Epson flatbed scanner). Does anyone know a fix for this?

I succesfully installed the driver. There is only on thing I wonder about. I have a LS-50 ED scanner, but the Twain source window has Nikon COOLSCAN V ED 1.02 @ USB as its window name at the top of the window. I don't remember if it was the same on my 32-bit Windows 7 system.

Anonymous said...

My situation is similar to Marcia's: Nikon LS-5000 ED and Epson V100 Photo/Document Scanner. After reading her comments, I am not going to risk screwing up my Epson scanner driver. Does anyone know a fix for this? I will not do this procedure until someone comes up with a way to that works for both scanners.

Axel;

I found your post via a couple of links on Microsoft Answers, first from FoxFifth and then from sabbebi. I'd had this same problem of buying a new computer with Windows 7 instead of Windows XP, and my very expensive Nikon Coolscan V slide scanner ceased working.
Your advice was clear and it worked perfectly. I was really surprised in fact, how well it worked, so immense gratitude.
My annoyance at the way companies fail to make their products compatable with new operating systems has been replaced by pleasant surprise at the level of assistance available at sites like this. God knows how you worked out this fix however!
Many thanks. I'm scanning again.

Thank you very much Axel. I now have my scanner working again. I have just posted the following to Nikon. I wonder how many customers they have lost over this.
-----Message to Nikon----
I have just found that my highly expensive Coolscan 5000 is 'not compatible' with Windows 7 at 64 bit. The only explanation is a laconic, cavalier comment on your site that 'it is not compatible' and you 'do not plan' to make it compatible.

I have been a devoted Nikon user for over 20 years, and I never fail to recommend your products to anyone. Now I find a rather treasured piece of hardware useless with nothing more helpful than you shrugging it off. I can only say from this moment on, this attitude has cost you a lifetime customer.

It is your duty and responsibility to ensure that you provide customers with fixes and patches to make sure that your products are compatible with OS upgrades.

I recall a slogan you used to have said something like 'We defy obsolescence.' That has rather a hollow ring at the moment.

I was running Windows 7 and the tip from Axel was very, very useful. My CoolScan IV was running perfect – Thanks a lot.
Now I have updated to Windows 8, and have problems with installing the drivers. When I try to install the drivers via Device Manager an error shows up, saying problems adding the drivers to the memory.
Do you have any solutions?

Thanks - it worked great and easy for Coolscan V (LS-50).

You are a great person to do this and post it. Keep it up! :)

Wrote the other day about NikonScan ver. 4.0.3 and CoolScan IV problems in Windows 8. Here is the solution. You have to restart Windows 8 as described below, in order to install the unsigned drivers from Axel.
From windows 8 control panel choose General –> Under “Advanced Startup” –> to prepare windows 8 for a Restart.

You will be prompted with the following options.
1. Continue
2. Troubleshoot
3. Turn off
-->Choose Troubleshoot

This menu will follow:
Refresh your PC
Reset your PC
Advanced Options
--> Choose Advanced Options

Then the following menu appears:
System Restore
System Image Recovery
Automatic Repair
Command Prompt
Windows Startup settings
-->Choose Windows Startup Settings.
-->Next click Restart.

Now the computer will restart and the boot menu appears.
Choose “Disable Driver signature Enforcement”) from the menu (number 7 on the list). Now windows will start and you can go on with the installation of the unsigned driver.
You can find some good illustrations by following this link (it is in Germany and from Silverfast’s supportsite):
https://www.silverfast.com/problemreport/de.html?filter=assistant&sub=Windows8driver&faq_id=136

After that you can install NikonScan ver. 4.0.3 (remember to uncheck Nikon’s drivers), and “wupty” everything is working perfect.

Have a nice day!

James,
i had problems initially too, after unzipping the files - try unzipping them to a easier to find location, eg a Desktop folder. Browse Location then successfully found it!

Many Thanks Axel, much appreciated.

My Coolscan V ED scans now look great with my new monitor (Dell U2412)!

Thank you so much! I can now use my Coolscan V Ed on my Windows 7 laptop. P.S. I will never buy another Nikon product due to their poor customer support!

Thank you, thank you!!!
Very easy steps to follow.
Was very worried that I would not be able to use my Nikon CoolScan V with windows 7.
Moving from Windows XP, due to Microsoft not supporting XP starting in April 2015. Bought new computer from Dell so I could have Windows 7 instead of Windows 8.

Thank you for your easy solution. I suggest to others that this is the best solution.

@Bud Pazur: You can download and install Nicon Scan later. Make sure to uncheck the built-in drivers during setup, though.

It seems that nikon warns against using the 4.03 driver on anything but windows vista. I have windows 7. Is there a different driver for that or does it really matter.

Keith said...

Axel, I followed your instructions but ran in to a problem installing the ns403en_vista.exe file on my Win 7 laptop. The error msg says: "The installed version of the application could not be determined. The setup will now terminate" ... Any suggestions?

I followed your procedure, and my LS-50 now works with Win 7. Many thanks! However, the scanner now makes a louder, more piercing sound while scanning than it did with Win XP. Does anyone know what the cause might be? Have any of you had a similar experience?

Your instructions were 100% on target. My LS-50 is now running on windows 8.1. Microsoft forced me to buy a new PC when they stopped supporting XP and my greatest worry was that my scanner wouldnt work on the new operating system. thanks again.

Translation:
"We do not intend to provide an update of Nikon Scan that will run under Windows 7".
Bloody arrogant!!!
Thanks SOOO much Axel, you saved the publication!

What`s wrong with me? Tried your way to get my Nikon LS-5000 running under win 8.1. Problems started shortly after opening the device Manager:found LS-5000ED under OTHER DEVICES. Proceeded precisely as you asked for. Points 2) - 4).Then the problems began: After 4) "Next", I got the message "LS-5000 ED could not be installed. The driver´s software for this device was not found. - FINISH". With all the others beeing so delighted with you solution, why can I not get the same results? Axel, Thank you for this excellent fix to my Super Coolscan 5000 ED. For the past 3 years I have been using Vuescan to operate the scanner. It is excellent software but does not have quite the same usefulness as Nikon's software that is now, once again, operating perfectly. I can understand a company not supplying upgrades when they bring out new models. To do so would restrict development. However, Nikon's abandonment of film scanners and any form of upgrade for them to match newer operating systems is not logical at all when Axels' upgrade is freely available. As with their abandonment of the Capture NX2 RAW converter, they are clearly distancing themselves from their customers. Thanks again Axel.

I loaded the Nikon Scan 4.0.3 - Windows Vista software from the Nikon Support, installed it on my HP Laptop with Windows 7 and let the software install the driver for the COOLSCAN IV, turned my COOLSCAN IV on, and I could scan my color negatives imediately.
So, where is the problem?

Hello Axel,
I followed your procedure and within 20 minutes, my Nikon Coolscan V was reading again my slides or negatives with my new PC running Windows 8.1
Thanks a lot, you're great.

Well, it doesn't seem to be working for me. Followed the process, and while the program boots up and all, every time it scans my negatives nothing happens! The scanner goes through the motions, but once it's finished nothing appears actually onscreen.

Thank you so much. It worked within 5 minutes. A pity there aren't Oscars for people like you.

What can I do?

Axel, Thank you for this method. It worked for my 5000ED, with one remaining issue, which is that I get an error from the scanner when I scan at 16-bit depth. I'll give a little more detail below. I am scanning mostly negatives now, but I have scanned 10,000 slides with this device over the years, and a few more slides recently after I installed it on Win7/64-bit (as described below).

There are several approaches to getting the 5000ED to run on Win7/64, and I tried two before I tried yours. (Perhaps these are, fundamentally, all the same, but I don't know.) Those other two approaches worked, too, until I discovered that the error I was getting very frequently from the scanner was due to trying to scan on 16-bit, and finally concluded that the problem had something to do with the driver. That's what led me (circuitously) to your page. Your approach did not fix the problem either, as I will explain.

One issue I encountered with your approach was that my 5000ED was not identified by windows after I had used the technique from http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64.html. It showed up as an "unknown device" under USB devices, rather than under imaging devices as a 5000ED. When I tried to update drivers per your instructions, Windows said it could not update the drivers. I fixed this by installing NS 4.03 as you described, and telling the wizard to install the 5000ED drivers. Then the 5000ED showed up under imaging devices and, hallelujah, Windows accepted your installation package. That was nice.

The remaining unsolved issue is that when I scan at 16-bit depth I get an error from the scanner, in a popup box, saying that an error occurred in scanning. This happens every time when I try to scan a strip of negatives using the SA-21 and it happens _almost_ every time when I try to scan a single slide. What is weird is that it will almost always work the second time.

If I select from the top menu Scanner/Settings/Reset to Factory Defaults, I can scan reliably, but only at 8-bit depth. Note that the top menu Settings/Bit Depth shows "none" after resetting to factory defaults, while the Scanner Extras/Scan Bit Depth shows 8. If you set 16 in Scanner Extras/Scan Bit Depth then that sets the Settings/Bit Depth to 16 (but problems start). It seems that you can get back to reliable batch scanning by setting the bit depth to 8 in the Scanner Extras _for all images_.

The key to stopping the bad behavior for me was to reset to factory defaults. I hope this helps someone else.

Since I am essentially scanning for use as a contact sheet, for family snapshots and for the web, I can tolerate scanning in bulk at 8 bits. If I have something I want to edit and print then I can go back and scan it twice to get a 16-bit scan. Still, I would like a fix for this. I strongly suspect that this problem must be in the driver kluge somewhere.

Thanks again. Ben Harding (ben atsign harding.boulder.co.us)

I am attempting to use this process on Win 7 pro running on a dell, to connect a Nikon Coolscan V ED (LS-50 scanner). Windows won't install the Axel drivers. I unzipped to a folder, pointed to the folder, and I get the message: "Windows won't install your LS-50". Read the notes from Jarle and Dark Lantern - that perhaps I need to restart windows in a mode that it will process unsigned files? The Axel driver files? Any help is appreciated, thanks all! Hoping to get it solved.
