First thing first, you need a small file named NikonUsbScanners64.zip, which contains information that will lead Windows to recognize your device as a scanner. Get it there and save it to some place on your hard disk, for example in your Documents folder (the actual location is unimportant, just make sure to know where you put it as you'll need to refer to that location later). Unzip the file: you should end up with a readme.txt file, NikonUsbScanners64.cat and NikonUsbScanners64.inf - note that there is no .sys and nothing executable, and that the relevant files are digitally signed.
Next, download the last version of Nikon Scan (4.03 at the time of this writing) from the Nikon website, then proceed as follow:
Plug the scanner in a free USB port, turn it on and let Windows try, and fail, to find a driver for it, then...
1) Open the Device Manager (the quickest way is to click the Start button on Windows' taskbar, type Device Manager in the search box, the start menu should soon display the needed entry, click to open). Windows 8.x users can simply type Device Manager on the start screen, then look under Settings.
2) In the Device Manager window, locate the LS-5000 ED scanner (or LS-40 / LS-50) under Other Devices, then right-click the scanner's name and click Update Driver Software...
3) Click Browse my computer for driver software.
4) Type the name of the folder where you have unzipped the driver files (or use the Browse... button to navigate to that folder) and click the Next button.
5) Click Install on the Windows Security prompt, then click Close after Windows finished installing the driver.
Finally, install Nikon Scan 4.03 normally, but be sure to uncheck both drivers (LS-4000 / 8000 / 9000 and LS-40 / 50 / 5000) on the Select Drivers page.
That's it. The 32-bit Nikon Scan 4 should work fine on Windows 8.1, 8 and 7 64-bit (and Vista) and your scanner should be found and recognized. You can now delete the zip, readme, cat and inf files, they are not needed anymore.
EDIT: Aug 24, 2013 - The driver information file is now signed with Axel's VeriSign Class 3 digital certificate, which should remove the warning that was displayed on Windows 8.x
Brought to you by the makers of FastPictureViewer Professional, a fast 64-bit image viewer designed for photographers, and the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack, a 64-bit image codec collection extending Windows 7, Vista and XP SP3 with raw format support for 460+ digital camera models, Photoshop PSD, and a number of other image file formats such as TGA, SGI, DDS, Open EXR, HDR and more.

Thank you very much! Worked like a charm!
Bless you! You just ended, in two minutes, a frustrating hour!
Thank you very much it works fine.I was ready to recycle my LS 40 !
Thanks for that. Saved me what would have been a long painful process I'm sure.
Thank you very much!! I have been searching for hours.
Thanks a lot, Axel.
That really great! it works!

What a shame that Nikon doesn't nothing to fix this problem. Now my scanner works fine due to this software! Thanks a lot
Thanks a lot Axel! Nikon is testing since September - what a shame! Of course there is Silverfast, but why pay for another software, especially when I prefer to use the NEF-format and do the colour and tone correction in the raw-converter or even later. Very helpful.
Best regards Andreas
Worked great! Thanks so much. I've spent a lot of time researching how to do this and this was by far the easiest process.
1 million thanks for having solved this problem, finally now I can again use my scanner ls 5000 with windows 7 Professional. A wonderful job again thanks from Italy and all those which i'll pass this valuable information.
I have a Nikon 8000 medium format scanner that is firewire connected not USB. will this process work with the firewirwe connection?
Frank
Thanks!!Bloody good work! Richard
You rock! This was really easy to do and saved me some money. I was frustrated that Nikon had abandoned support and I hadn't found any solutions till I found your blog.
Can't thank you enough Axel. A brilliant fix with excellent instructions that were easy to follow! You have done what Nikon should have done. Its wonderful to be able to use my LS-5000 again!
Thank you again with Best Wishes
Nigel
Excellent Axel,
Thank a lot !!!
Roland.
Dear Axel,
it still works great! What a shame of Nikon! I will never more buy Nikon products. The service will be very bad. Thanks a lot.
Thanks Axel. It worked just fine for me with my Nikon CoolScan V ED. Solid instructions as well. Very much appreciate your help. Now, as to Nikon???? Oh well, as they say: "no comment" on that issue.
Thanks again.
PZ
P.S. I posted my sucess on the following website as sabebbi:

Thanks a million, Axel. It only took a couple minutes and I'm up and running again.

Many thanks for the "Nikon" 64bit driver. Very clear instructions.
I just home built a Windows 7 64bit computer and I'm scanning again already.
Inexcusable the way Nikon abandoned us.
Thanks! It worked!
By virtue of your driver solution I was up and running in minutes on my highest spec PC. This will make scanning and editing an altogether MUCH nicer experience. I very much appreciate your effort in making your solution generally available.
Thanks
Dave
Thanks, Axel, for sharing your solution to the 64-bit hurdle that Nikon refused to take!
Doesn't work for me. Error message:
"Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device."
and "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
This is a brand new Dell system, running 64-bit Win 7 Pro. Also tried Vuescan - doesn't work. I've even tried booting into Ubuntu (using the live cd option) - doesn't work - which leads me to believe I have a hardware issue. Just tried the scanner on my old XP system - scanner works fine.
Any suggestions?
Worked like a charm. It's awfully good of you, Axel, to provide this community service.
Best wishes - VD.
Brilliant!!
Thanks so much for this.
It works great.
I'm really glad people like you exist :-)
Raf
Großartige Lösung.
War auch für mich verständlich.
Danke!
You are fantastic - I was so depressed - new computer and OS - and then Nikon said "no way..." I'm back to scanning images my grandmother took in the 1950's and 60's. THANKS!!!
Thanks for your tute. I was literally ready to toss the scanner into the garbage I was so frustrated.
One word - THANK's!
Worked smoothely.
Thank you for taking the time to make it so clear how to make this work.
Often folks online give solutions that assume you know some of the more obscure things they're telling you to do, rather then taking you through each step like you did.
Your instructions left nothing out and I got my 5000 running without a glitch in 5 minutes on my Windows 7 64bit laptop, much obliged.
As someone said above, how hard would it be for Nikon to post such a fix on their website? That company has a lot to learn from Canon, which is much better at taking care of its customers.
Thanks again, if people follow the sequence exactly, (i.e. don't install the program until the OS has identified and incorporated the inf files) it'll go without a hitch.
Thank you so much Axel!
At the end of 2009 I bought a new PC configuration to be able to work a bit faster with my Nikon Coolscan V. I was very disappointed after discovering the scanner couldn't work with Windows 7. Nikon NL would automatically keep me updated as soon there was news about to share. After almost a year I still didn't receive any message and I myself discovered Nikon would not provide us with any software update at all. You can imagine how hapy I am today.
Your described solution is simple to understand and also to install.
You did a great job; WELL DONE!!
I have the same problem as Jarle
Doesn't work for me. Error message:
"Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device."
and "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
I remember to have deleted the MS driver for the scanner during the process
Stef

Mate, you rock!!
I've been trying with Windows 7 x64, Ubuntu Linux & OSX Snow Leopard and none of them worked with the Nikon software or Xsane.
But now I'm actually scanning!
Great, Thanks!
Many thanks! I've been waiting patiently for Nikon to update the driver for Windows 7 64-bit to work with my Nikon Coolscan V ED. I was disappaointed to find they were not planning an update, since the Coolscan was quite pricey. Your solution works great and your directions were accurate and easy to understand. Invaluable!!
Quick, easy fix that works. Thanks very much.
However, my LS 5000 running Nikonscan Vista is slower than XP version, (both in compatability mode,) and both get progressively slower by about 5 seconds per scan.
(Win 7-64, i7 860, 6GB ram, nothing evident in Task Manager/Resource Monitor.)
Any suggestions please?
Hallo Axel,
das ist absolute Spitzenklasse! Das Beste, was es im Internet zum Thema LS-5000-Treiber unter Win 7 64Bit gibt! Vielen herzlichen Dank für deine hervorragende Arbeit!
Gruß
Gerhard
As we say in Australia, Good Onya! Thanks very much for a great solution; you made my New Year's day...Windows 7 + your driver + LS 5000.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU!!
Your kindness is posting this lucid explanation is very much appreciated.
Ciao,
Charles
It works!!!!
thanks a lot Axel. You made a great work.
thank you so much for this miracle. It's in how you google I guess. I've tried many fixes to no avail. Your solution worked and it's so simple. My V ed is functioning again with my Windows 7 and I cannot be happier. Thank you Axel
Great! Thank you! Fuck Nikon! Praie Axel
Brilliant and simple solution, thank you so much.
More than brilliant!
Thank you SO much!
Thanks a lot. Worked flawlessly.
It's nice to see your solution helping us year after year.
You are my hero! Infinite thanks, I'll put your portrait on my bedside table!
Seriously, I was desperate, thanks.
Just got a new computer last week and was mightily pissed that Nikon left us hanging. And then have the audacity to suggest that we buy and learn a third party piece of software after spending a small fortune on the hardware to begin with. I guess it never occurred to them that people who own film scanners also buy other high end photo equipment. (Dumb SOBs!)
I can't thank you enough for this fix. Very clear instructions and dead simple to install. I was about to turn my LS-40 into a very expensive doorstop. Now I'm back to scanning with it.
As everyone else has said, it worked great for setting up my Nikon slide scanner. Unfortunately it has blocked my Epson flatbed scanner from working any longer, even after uninstalling and reinstalling it. And when I tried uninstalling the Nikon scanner (which is only an occasional use scanner for me), it just gives an error message that "Nikon 4.0.3 doesn't run on this operating system" and won't let me uninstall it (so that I can reinstall my everyday Epson flatbed scanner). Does anyone know a fix for this?
I have the 32 bit Windows 7. Willthis solution work for it?
Thank u!!!
I succesfully installed the driver. There is only on thing I wonder about. I have a LS-50 ED scanner, but the Twain source window has Nikon COOLSCAN V ED 1.02 @ USB as its window name at the top of the window. I don't remember if it was the same on my 32-bit Windows 7 system.
My situation is similar to Marcia's: Nikon LS-5000 ED and Epson V100 Photo/Document Scanner. After reading her comments, I am not going to risk screwing up my Epson scanner driver. Does anyone know a fix for this? I will not do this procedure until someone comes up with a way to that works for both scanners.
Great ! You saved my life.
Many thanks from Lyon, France.
Thank you very much for your work and hope your business does well.
I followed your simple instructions and my Coolscan 5000 started working immediately. My Epson V700 stopped working. I then shut down and restarted ready to start working on the Epson problem but found that after the shutdown it too was working. All great.
WHEW!!! Thank goodness you're smarter (and nicer) than Nikon. You solved it, Axel -- many, many thanks!
Nikon owes you, big time.
Thankx a lot. Was a piece of cake with your instructions!
Oh my goodness. I am the world's least technological person and I worried A LOT about doing this, but it worked.
1 thing that might help other anxious people:
Ignore the fact that the Nikon scan 4.03 download says it's for Windows Vista. I am running OS Windows 7 but it does work perfectly for Windows 7.
Axel, you are an ABSOLUTE GENIUS. Thank you so much. Get a job with Nikon!
2)
My turn.. Thank you!!!
A thousand thanks. I thought my Coolscan 5000ED would forever be coupled to my old XP machine - now it works a treat on my new Windows 7 64-bit laptop. You are great for making this available.
Thank you so very much!
Excellent instructions and it works beautifully.
Just as almost all the previous posters have said - worked like a charm! Absolute lifesaver
Great solution!
Great Axel,
will this work on a MAC Leopard too?
That would be great.
Tanks!
Hmm, no, this will not work on a Mac, sorry.
Axel;
I found your post via a couple of links on Microsoft Answers, first from FoxFifth and then from sabbebi. I'd had this same problem of buying a new computer with Windows 7 instead of Windows XP, and my very expensive Nikon Coolscan V slide scanner ceased working.
Your advice was clear and it worked perfectly. I was really surprised in fact, how well it worked, so immense gratitude.
My annoyance at the way companies fail to make their products compatable with new operating systems has been replaced by pleasant surprise at the level of assistance available at sites like this. God knows how you worked out this fix however!
Many thanks. I'm scanning again.
Alun
Thank you very much Axel. I now have my scanner working again. I have just posted the following to Nikon. I wonder how many customers they have lost over this.
-----Message to Nikon----
I have just found that my highly expensive Coolscan 5000 is 'not compatible' with Windows 7 at 64 bit. The only explanation is a laconic, cavalier comment on your site that 'it is not compatible' and you 'do not plan' to make it compatible.
I have been a devoted Nikon user for over 20 years, and I never fail to recommend your products to anyone. Now I find a rather treasured piece of hardware useless with nothing more helpful than you shrugging it off. I can only say from this moment on, this attitude has cost you a lifetime customer.
It is your duty and responsibility to ensure that you provide customers with fixes and patches to make sure that your products are compatible with OS upgrades.
I recall a slogan you used to have said something like 'We defy obsolescence.' That has rather a hollow ring at the moment.
My old computer crashed and replaced with one that had the Win 7 OS. I followed your instructions and they worked like a charm! Thank you.
The Kull Dude, Idaho USA
It did it for us, in a breeze of time. Technically, it is the best worked out solution. We thank you very much.
This works perfectly Thank you so much for the effort!
much gratitude. a great fix!
Jeff in Mass
Thank you very much
Now I can go back to using my scanner COOLSCANIV
in catalan: Moltes gràcies,
Ara podré tornar a fer servir el meu scanner COOLSCANIV
Awesome. So clearly and patiently written out for even the most inept PC user. A model for helping others. Thank you.
Billie Lawless
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Awesome solution, Axel !! Thanks for your help. You have made a lot of folks happy with this. Nikon still deserves much abuse for their shameful lack of product support for their excellent and expensive scanners. Nikon should at least post a link to this solution!
Will this solution work with a Nikon super coolscan 4000 ED, with FIREWIRE, running on Win 7 64 bit, if not is there a relevant s/ware solution? thank you I would be appreciative of ANY feedback on this...
Thank you very much! My Nikon LS-50 sat "bricked" for nearly three years until I found this fix. Nikon's lack of support for Win7 is SHAMEFUL.
BTW: Nikon continues their lack of descent customer service even today with many of my working photo colleagues finding zero sense of urgency from Nikon regarding prompt servicing of their DSLR's.
When I get to Geneva, the first round of drinks is all my pleasure.
Cheers!
I am a 79 yr old (80 in 2 weeks), totalluy computer unsavvy and I was able to do this peocess. Thak you, Axel!!!!
How the #&(%##$^& hell can Nikon not have this download on their website.
Thanks again!!!
Thank you, you saved my day! This solution works perfect on my computer with W7 64.
Tusen takk! I've installed it on our computers in Ås and in Tromsø. Works great. Nice explanation. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this. It worked perfectly. MUCH APPRECIATED!
My English is bad but I want to thank you for your help. Really great. thanks
awesomne - thanks so much
Hi Axel.
Thank you for agreat solution, I followed your instructions exactly and the end result is that my coolscan V ED is working perfectly with windows 7 64bit.
Thank you so much
Alan
Suppper!!! Klappt mit einem frischen W7_64bit (DEll Edition)
Many thanks!
Daniel aus Deutschland.
Grazie per l'aiuto.
Funziona!!!
Ciao
This is an excellent piece of work. Many thanks.
It is shameful that a "professional" company like Nikon chooses to leave its customers high and dry in such an off-hand manner.
Your solution works a treat, and like many of your previous commenters, I am so grateful for what you have done.
Thank you once again.
I'll be renting a 5000 for a few days - will it work with 32bit version of Windows 7 as well, or do I need some other work around?
Great job, Axel! Kudos to you!
My old LS40 that has been gathering dust in the attic for quite some years is in business again.
Thanks a bunch!
It worked perfectly.
Thanks a lot!
Thanks you !!!
A friend is dead. The funeral is tomorrow. I have a B&W negative of my friend that I want to give to the mother of my dead friend.
Now I am sitting here with my Win 7 and my "old" Coolscan V ED. They won´t play with each other. Fuck Nikon and everyone else.
But hey - I found your web page here and after app. one hour I think I got it solved.
Thanks and thanks again.
Mvh. Erik Daugaard, Copenhagen
Thank you so much for this workaround. FYI, I'm using it on a Mac running Snow Leopard with a Win 7 64-bit Boot Camp partition and Parallels. So far it's working seamlessly. Thanks again.
I almost gave up, then I found your blog. Excellent solution to this annoying problem. Works like a charm on my W7/64.
You definitely saved my day!
Thank you so much.
Fantastic! So glad I found your solution, Axel. I can keep using my Coolscan V. Thanks so much.
Thank you Axel. Very kind of you to publish this fix. LS-50, Win7 64bit, no conflicts with existing canon mx860 scanner.
Thank you so much! You are a lifesaver. The directions were easy to follow and worked like a charm on the first try.
You are happy, but not me!
I have Nikon LS-8000ED scanner and my Windows can not locate the scanner in Devices Manager (Other Devices) so I am not able to choose scanner's name and click Update Driver Software.
WHAT IS WRONG!
My LS-8000ED is connected with PC via FireWere 1394 cable, not USB (there is not socket in scanner panel for USB port).
NEED your HELP!
Hi - everybody and Axel
I was running Windows 7 and the tip from Axel was very, very useful. My CoolScan IV was running perfect – Thanks a lot.
Now I have updated to Windows 8, and have problems with installing the drivers. When I try to install the drivers via Device Manager an error shows up, saying problems adding the drivers to the memory.
Do you have any solutions?
Thanks - it worked great and easy for Coolscan V (LS-50).
You are a great person to do this and post it. Keep it up! :)
Wrote the other day about NikonScan ver. 4.0.3 and CoolScan IV problems in Windows 8. Here is the solution. You have to restart Windows 8 as described below, in order to install the unsigned drivers from Axel.
From windows 8 control panel choose General –> Under “Advanced Startup” –> to prepare windows 8 for a Restart.
You will be prompted with the following options.
1. Continue
2. Troubleshoot
3. Turn off
-->Choose Troubleshoot
This menu will follow:
Refresh your PC
Reset your PC
Advanced Options
--> Choose Advanced Options
Then the following menu appears:
System Restore
System Image Recovery
Automatic Repair
Command Prompt
Windows Startup settings
-->Choose Windows Startup Settings.
-->Next click Restart.
Now the computer will restart and the boot menu appears.
Choose “Disable Driver signature Enforcement”) from the menu (number 7 on the list). Now windows will start and you can go on with the installation of the unsigned driver.
You can find some good illustrations by following this link (it is in Germany and from Silverfast’s supportsite):
https://www.silverfast.com/problemreport/de.html?filter=assistant&sub=Windows8driver&faq_id=136
After that you can install NikonScan ver. 4.0.3 (remember to uncheck Nikon’s drivers), and “wupty” everything is working perfect.
Have a nice day!
Ole Vedel, Copenhagen
Axel, you're the man! Got my Coolscan IV to work flawlessly on my Win7 x64 machine.
I bow to you sir! :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! IT WORKS!!!!
THANK YOU!! IT WORKS!!! Shame on Nikon!
With regard to the Anonymous post on November 12th concerning Windows8 driver installs. If you follow Axel's instructions down to and including downloading from Nikon's web site and then follow the additional Windows8 instructions already mentioned then it works a treat. I didn't even need to reinstall the scanner software a second time.
Great work, Axel. Thanks for sharing your knowlwedges. Marco Pizzotti - Lecco - Italia
Axel,
Wanted to say "Thank you" for making simple what would have been an ordeal I could not afford. Thanks a million!
Thank-you 1 million times. Last time I looked into running my Nikon CS V on Win7 all posts said no so I put it aside. This post saved my day and scanner. Nikon owes you big time.

Thanks to Axel and 'anon' from Denmark for the concise windows 8 work around
I was up and running in 10 minutes and after 3 days of use is more stable than on my XP. No print driver clashes.
It's impressive that you are getting ideas from this piece of writing as well as from our argument made at this time.

You rock !
Merci beaucoup :)
Hello Axel :)
Many thanks for the clear instructions on how to get the Nikon scanner to works with Win7 64-bit.

Beste Axel.
Opgelost . Toch bedankt
Just wanted to say thanks for this - Worked like a charm.
I can only say that you made my life so much easier. I am so grateful. You are so smart. Smarter than Nikon for sure. You're the greatest!!!
Thanks a MILLION! I can't tell you how happy I am!!!
Salve, ho applicato alla FireWere 1394 un convertitore USB ma lo scanner non viene visto dal sistema Windows 8! Avete una soluzione a questo problema?
Hi - Thanks - Nikon Scan up and running. I used to use this scanner by importing it through to Photoshop - is there a way I can still do this?
the same for me, too easy ! many thanks, LS50 is a very good scanner and we love it (a french photoclub).
Grazie

hi, in 2013 this topic is still valid!
Works like a charm on win7 running in VirtualBox!
Thanks!

Got it to work. THANK YOU AXEL! Tried several times to update driver in Device Manager, but no joy. Also tried a very similar process described in SevenForums (http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64.html) And I could not update the driver that way either. In the end, I did the sevenforum process but clicked on Axel's file and Success! Not sure why, but I am happy Axel got me where I needed to be. Danke/Merci/Grazzi/Thanks ----Griffy
I also was succesfull in installing the driver required for Nikon Coolscan V in Windows 7. Thank you very much Axel. The German firm that delivered the scanner five years ago, asked 139 euro for "an update" that would make it possible to use the scanner with the newer Windows OS...
Thank you so much for this solution. I've spend hours trying to solve the problem. Like the dust/oil issue in the D600, Nikon is turning his back to loyal costumers. There are millions of negatives and slides that still need to be scanned by these machines.
Thanks Axel works great wasted a lot of time on other sites trying to get a fix.
Grazie mille, funziona perfettamente.
Thank you very much, I was desperate.
f.
Far better than trying to use XP mode. thanks.
I have just tried what worked for everyone, but my computer with Windows 7 64 bit reported: "Nikon LS-4 The device cannot start (Code 40)". I tried downloading file again but continued to get the same message.
HELP
James,
i had problems initially too, after unzipping the files - try unzipping them to a easier to find location, eg a Desktop folder. Browse Location then successfully found it!
Many Thanks Axel, much appreciated.
My Coolscan V ED scans now look great with my new monitor (Dell U2412)!
My good faith in Nikon has been betrayed, but thanks to you, my driver problem was solved in a few minutes. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much! I can now use my Coolscan V Ed on my Windows 7 laptop. P.S. I will never buy another Nikon product due to their poor customer support!
Mike in Sacramento
Yes, it worked without fuss. Thank you.
Thank you, thank you!!!
Very easy steps to follow.
Was very worried that I would not be able to use my Nikon CoolScan V with windows 7.
Moving from Windows XP, due to Microsoft not supporting XP starting in April 2015. Bought new computer from Dell so I could have Windows 7 instead of Windows 8.
Thank you for your easy solution. I suggest to others that this is the best solution.
December 19.2013
@Bud Pazur: You can download and install Nicon Scan later. Make sure to uncheck the built-in drivers during setup, though.
I can not thank you enough!!!!
Just like the others : Merci beaucoup :))
Vielen, vielen Dank für diese großartige Hilfe.
Many, many thanks!!! I searched for a lot of time after a solution für a non programmer like me. I have a Nikon Coolscan V ED and Windows 7. Now the scanner is scanning again!!
Really great.
Terrific Axel - A very special thank you for your kindness in creating solution and sharing it with the world. Many good wishes to you!
It seems that nikon warns against using the 4.03 driver on anything but windows vista. I have windows 7. Is there a different driver for that or does it really matter.
Axel, I followed your instructions but ran in to a problem installing the ns403en_vista.exe file on my Win 7 laptop. The error msg says: "The installed version of the application could not be determined. The setup will now terminate" ... Any suggestions?
I followed your procedure, and my LS-50 now works with Win 7. Many thanks! However, the scanner now makes a louder, more piercing sound while scanning than it did with Win XP. Does anyone know what the cause might be? Have any of you had a similar experience?
Thank you veeeeeery much for your help, I was almost giving up, but after reading your advieses, I finally made my scanner work again!
Merci mille fois Axel.
Axel did an excellen job very helpful for Nikon scanners users. Clear and effective. Thank you!
Le LS 50 fonctionne parfaitement même avec Windows 8, seul problème je n'ai pas de JPEG, le choix à l'enregistrement est PSD,
TIFF ou NEF. Avez vous un conseil pour ce cas de figure?
Merci.
Salutations.
GUY MASQUELIER.
Your instructions were 100% on target. My LS-50 is now running on windows 8.1. Microsoft forced me to buy a new PC when they stopped supporting XP and my greatest worry was that my scanner wouldnt work on the new operating system. thanks again.

Driver update worked perfectly, but unable to install Nikon Scan v4.03 on Windows 8.1 Update 1 – installer gives me error "Nikon Scan 4 does not run on this operating system."
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Mon scanner LS-50 fonctionne bien maintenant avec Windows8.
Merci beaucoup
Many thanks, Axel. Finally I'm able to use my LS-5000 scanner, again. Installation of your drivers and of Nikon Scan 4.03 under Windows 7 worked just fine. And it scans and scans ...
Many thanks. My 5000 ED is up and running in Windows 7. Tried to install in Windows 7 XP mode with no success. Are 32 bit drivers available?
Needed urgently scan of old slide for publication - some 2 month after installing W7 on ALL of my computers.
Nikon (dutch support website):
"We zijn niet van plan een update van Nikon Scan uit te brengen die kan worden uitgevoerd onder Windows 7."
Translation:
"We do not intend to provide an update of Nikon Scan that will run under Windows 7".
Bloody arrogant!!!
Thanks SOOO much Axel, you saved the publication!

What`s wrong with me? Tried your way to get my Nikon LS-5000 running under win 8.1. Problems started shortly after opening the device Manager:found LS-5000ED under OTHER DEVICES. Proceeded precisely as you asked for. Points 2) - 4).Then the problems began: After 4) "Next", I got the message "LS-5000 ED could not be installed. The driver´s software for this device was not found. - FINISH". With all the others beeing so delighted with you solution, why can I not get the same results? Greetings from Germany, isiheim@t-online.de (please do NOT SHOW my E-Mail-address!)
I just tried many times with the instructions to install my coolscan v ed on windows 8.1 and I always get the same error message:"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting tp install it."
I did everyuthing as indicated.
Any idea someone?
Thank, you!!!
I just found a used Coolscan V ED locally and purchased. I was able to install the driver on my Windows 7 64 laptop before I went to check it out and it worked great!
Génial! même en 2014, ça marche!
Congrats, Axel!!!

Congrats, Axel!!!
The XP computer we were using the LS-5000 on just died. We were about to throw out the scanner, when I found this. It works great for Win 7 32bit, THANKS!
Axel, thank you very much for the simple instructions for getting my Nikon CoolScan V working on Windows 7. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge to help us all.
Cheers! Leo
Axel, Thank you for this excellent fix to my Super Coolscan 5000 ED. For the past 3 years I have been using Vuescan to operate the scanner. It is excellent software but does not have quite the same usefulness as Nikon's software that is now, once again, operating perfectly. I can understand a company not supplying upgrades when they bring out new models. To do so would restrict development. However, Nikon's abandonment of film scanners and any form of upgrade for them to match newer operating systems is not logical at all when Axels' upgrade is freely available. As with their abandonment of the Capture NX2 RAW converter, they are clearly distancing themselves from their customers. Thanks again Axel.

Thank you! Makes Nikon look a little silly. Your solution works great.
Just got out my old Nikon LS50ED to scan a few slides and found out it wouldn't work with my new computer with Windows 8. Followed instructions and it works.
Thanks
thank you very much, I followed your instructions and everything worked just as you wrote. Fabrizio from Italy.
Thanks so much...You saved my LS-5000 ED.....From France....

I loaded the Nikon Scan 4.0.3 - Windows Vista software from the Nikon Support, installed it on my HP Laptop with Windows 7 and let the software install the driver for the COOLSCAN IV, turned my COOLSCAN IV on, and I could scan my color negatives imediately.
So, where is the problem?
Hello Axel,
I followed your procedure and within 20 minutes, my Nikon Coolscan V was reading again my slides or negatives with my new PC running Windows 8.1
Thanks a lot, you're great.
Well, it doesn't seem to be working for me. Followed the process, and while the program boots up and all, every time it scans my negatives nothing happens! The scanner goes through the motions, but once it's finished nothing appears actually onscreen.
Thank you so much. It worked within 5 minutes. A pity there aren't Oscars for people like you.
It's all been said already but: Very many thanks Axel, for such clear and helpful instructions and support. I'm amazed that Nikon think it's OK to sell expensive scanners that they don't bother supporting. Thanks goodness there are helpful & knowledgeable people such as you. Thnaks again.
Thank you so much for your assistance...I can't wait to start scanning some of my negatives...once again. thank you thank you!
Thank you so much for this Axel!
Your instructions were very clear and accurate. Thanks so much emabling me to resurrect my Nikon Coolscan V ED scanner!
Phil Krugler
with gratitude. it works like a charm.
Worked just as described. Any chance of getting such a bundle of instructions for the PAKON F-235 or F-135 scanners?
Hello! Thank you for drivers and advices. All works fine for the first 3 scans. After this "Enable Post Processing" checkbox stayed disabled and gray. I cant turn it on, and cant use ROC & GEM sliders...
I tried to re-install nikon skan and drivers, but it doesnt help...
What can I do?
P.S. I'm using LS-5000 model.
That is simply great, thank you very much!
Axel, Thank you for this method. It worked for my 5000ED, with one remaining issue, which is that I get an error from the scanner when I scan at 16-bit depth. I'll give a little more detail below. I am scanning mostly negatives now, but I have scanned 10,000 slides with this device over the years, and a few more slides recently after I installed it on Win7/64-bit (as described below).
There are several approaches to getting the 5000ED to run on Win7/64, and I tried two before I tried yours. (Perhaps these are, fundamentally, all the same, but I don't know.) Those other two approaches worked, too, until I discovered that the error I was getting very frequently from the scanner was due to trying to scan on 16-bit, and finally concluded that the problem had something to do with the driver. That's what led me (circuitously) to your page. Your approach did not fix the problem either, as I will explain.
One issue I encountered with your approach was that my 5000ED was not identified by windows after I had used the technique from http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64.html. It showed up as an "unknown device" under USB devices, rather than under imaging devices as a 5000ED. When I tried to update drivers per your instructions, Windows said it could not update the drivers. I fixed this by installing NS 4.03 as you described, and telling the wizard to install the 5000ED drivers. Then the 5000ED showed up under imaging devices and, hallelujah, Windows accepted your installation package. That was nice.
The remaining unsolved issue is that when I scan at 16-bit depth I get an error from the scanner, in a popup box, saying that an error occurred in scanning. This happens every time when I try to scan a strip of negatives using the SA-21 and it happens _almost_ every time when I try to scan a single slide. What is weird is that it will almost always work the second time.
If I select from the top menu Scanner/Settings/Reset to Factory Defaults, I can scan reliably, but only at 8-bit depth. Note that the top menu Settings/Bit Depth shows "none" after resetting to factory defaults, while the Scanner Extras/Scan Bit Depth shows 8. If you set 16 in Scanner Extras/Scan Bit Depth then that sets the Settings/Bit Depth to 16 (but problems start). It seems that you can get back to reliable batch scanning by setting the bit depth to 8 in the Scanner Extras _for all images_.
The key to stopping the bad behavior for me was to reset to factory defaults. I hope this helps someone else.
Since I am essentially scanning for use as a contact sheet, for family snapshots and for the web, I can tolerate scanning in bulk at 8 bits. If I have something I want to edit and print then I can go back and scan it twice to get a 16-bit scan. Still, I would like a fix for this. I strongly suspect that this problem must be in the driver kluge somewhere.
Thanks again. Ben Harding (ben atsign harding.boulder.co.us)
I am attempting to use this process on Win 7 pro running on a dell, to connect a Nikon Coolscan V ED (LS-50 scanner). Windows won't install the Axel drivers. I unzipped to a folder, pointed to the folder, and I get the message: "Windows won't install your LS-50". Read the notes from Jarle and Dark Lantern - that perhaps I need to restart windows in a mode that it will process unsigned files? The Axel driver files? Any help is appreciated, thanks all! Hoping to get it solved.
Installed drivers on Windows 8.1. 64-bit and works fine, thanks.
Now Windows 10 came out.
If I upgrade to Windows 10, will Scanner Coolscan V ED still work ?
I've tried it on Windows 10 Pro and it works fine.
Just tried on windows 8.1 on Lenovo desktop comp and DIDN'T work!!!
Just installed on Windows 10 - works a treat - thanks for the great work!
